Class is cancelled for more than 4,200 students today as teachers in Woburn continue to demand pay increases for education support professionals, smaller class sizes, and twice-a-week physical education classes for elementary school students.
According to a statement Sunday from the Woburn Teachers, Sunday's negotiations began at 10 a.m. and ended around 6 p.m. Improvements to paraprofessionals' wages were among the issues that the union said it wanted to raise but that Woburn leaders"were not willing to discuss."
“We could’ve gotten this contract settled tonight," said Barbara Locke, president of the teachers association, in the statement. In a separate statement, the Woburn school committee said the union had voted to strike on Friday and called the strike"illegal, disruptive and unnecessary." Earlier last week, in anticipation of the vote, the school committee said it filed a petition with the state Department of Labor Relations to investigate an illegal strike.
“The School Committee and Mayor Scott Galvin have been negotiating in good faith for more than a year with the WTA to reach an agreement on a successor collective bargaining agreement. Throughout this process, it has been our mission to develop a contract that is fair for our students, staff and residents of Woburn," the school committee's statement read.
The school committee said it had reached a tentative agreement with the Woburn Teachers Association in October 2022 but the union did not ratify it.This story is developing and will be updated.
