Thanh Long has delighted San Franciscans with its famous garlic noodles and Dungeness crab for five decades.
It's hard to imagine Thanh Long as anything other than a famous San Francisco restaurant celebrated for its Vietnamese fare, but if you could travel back in time, the beloved restaurant would be totally unrecognizable.Thanh Long opened by pure chance in 1971. The hardships of the Vietnam War had stirred Diana, the matriarchal family figure, to fly to San Francisco in 1969 so she could spend some time with her cousin.
Diana’s husband, John An, was livid when he found out about the decision upon her return to Vietnam. He was concerned about the impulsive purchase but couldn’t do more than complain. It was far too late to back out of the deal now. “She said ‘It's OK, don't change it. Green means luck. Just leave it like that,’” Helene recalls her mother-in-law said. So, the name stuck.
