It was a tough opening series for the Guardians.
Giants lefty Alex Wood pitched five shutout innings, striking out five and scattering four Cleveland hits along with two walks. He left after the first two Guardians reached base in the sixth, but Zack Littell retired José Ramírez on an infield pop and got Franmil Reyes to ground into a double play to end the threat.“You can see by his delivery, there’s a lot of deception there, but with it, there’s also some movement,” Francona said.
It was the second time in the inning the Guardians missed a chance to turn two after Brandon Crawford’s one-hop smash got stuck in the webbing of Bradley’s glove for a tough-luck infield hit. Aaron Civale was victimized by the outcome, as the Cleveland starter allowed three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk in four innings.
“We need to be good defensively,” Francona said. “We made some mistakes and it cost us. So, hopefully we’ll work at getting better because we need to.” In the first inning, Ramírez lined a two-strike pitch from Wood to the gap in left center and tried to stretch the hit into a double, but Joc Pederson made a strong throw and got Ramírez for the final out of the inning.
