'The audience was just the sort of gathering King would have loved, a true cross-section of Northeast Ohio sitting side by side and even joining in song.'

Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert with the Cleveland Orchestra, January 15, 2023CLEVELAND, Ohio – Few events on the Cleveland Orchestra’s calendar rank more highly or do greater good than the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert.

The audience, for one, was just the sort of gathering King would have loved, a true cross-section of Northeast Ohio sitting side by side and even joining in song. Assistant conductor Daniel Reith was the musical leader, and former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones made for an insightful emcee, but everyone in the room contributed, just by being there.

Deepening the impact of the group was guest bass Soloman Howard, whose rich, resonant voice cut straight to the emotional quick in “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” and who then treated the crowd to a rousing medley of spirituals while accompanying himself on tambourine. One also couldn’t help but get caught up in the spirit of Richard Smallwood’s “Total Praise,” an annual favorite, which on Sunday reached fervent heights.

Another titan of the era, William Dawson, saw an animated reading of “O Le’ Me Shine, Shine Like a Morning Star!,” the third movement from his “Negro Folk Symphony.”
