During a conversation with a fellow officer outside of the woman's presence that was captured on body camera, officer Brendan Marzan called her “a lesbian lesbian” who was “very stereotypical” and “super overdramatic,” according to a city investigator.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cleveland police officer who used stereotypes to reference a woman’s sexual orientation during a 2021 crisis-intervention call should be reprimanded, the city’s Civilian Police Review Board ruled Tuesday.

On Oct. 8, 2021, officers arrived at the home of Catherine Toth after someone called 911 for a wellness check regarding work-related stress. The service call turned chaotic: Toth’s wife was knocked to the ground, and Toth suffered injuries from the officers’ use of force. She was ultimately taken to a hospital.

Addressing the board herself, Toth blasted the police response that day. “Not one single officer showed one single iota of empathy,” she said. “They were laughing. They were bullying. They were bigoted.” Det. Jeff Follmer, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, the union representing patrol officers, reserved judgment, saying, “We’re waiting for the discipline process to take place.”
