A worldwide study is testing the possibility that the drug lecanemab could slow or stop the earliest brain changes due to Alzheimer’s disease, before symptoms show. Two local sites are participating: the Cleveland Clinic & Case Western Reserve University.

“We’re really crossing our fingers that has a much bigger and more profound effect on delaying or reducing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s,” said Dr. Douglas Scharre, But the cost of lecanemab— $26,500 annually — and limited availability for most Alzheimer’s patients who could benefit from it, make it controversial.
The AHEAD trial enrolls people up to age 80 who have amyloid, but aren’t experiencing memory or cognition problems. People in this category often have a family member with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
