Terrence Spivey's Clotilda drama 'An Ocean in My Bones' will be performed again at Africatown's 2023 Spirit of Our Ancestors Festival — but it won't be the same work audiences saw in 2022.
and other film-industry news sources rank as a likely Oscar nominee for best documentary – and the drama “The Woman King,” which touches on the Clotilda story in an indirect but interesting way.
“It’s not as grand as Jeremy makes it seem,” Frazier said. “I know what’s important – that we help this story survive.” Spivey said he respects the fact that “The Woman King” didn’t entirely gloss over the Agojie warriors’ complicity in slavery. “They did throw some facts in there,” he said. Spivey also is finding ways to show the important role that women had in founding, sustaining and guiding the Africatown community. It’s a subject near to Frazier’s heart, she said, because she’s descended from Lottie Dennison, one of the women who survived the Clotilda’s final voyage.

Particularly some African American men, some of us, we don’t show emotions. We put our heads down or go someplace else and do it quietly, silently. So I’ve been working with them to let their faces be seen.
