CNBC ranks Texas the 'worst state' in which to live, work

Citing things including access to health care, voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights and crime, CNBC has ranked Texas at the top of its 'worst states to live and work in' list for 2023.

TEXAS – For the first time since the list was compiled, CNBC recently knocked Texas out of the top five of its annual “Now, the reasons CNBC listed for moving Texas down to No. 6 on that list have put it at the top of a less-than-desirable list: “With what is regularly touted as a state with a business-friendly climate, low taxes, attractive business districts and residential neighborhoods, it’s difficult to see how Texas could land at the No. 1 spot for worst places to live and work.

Violent crime rose about 10% between 2018 and 2011, CNBC said, citing FBI statistics. Texas has the 13th-highest crime rate. Texas has also seen a number of mass shootings in the past few years, including the Robb Elementary School shooting in 2022 that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers as well as the more recent shooting at an outlet mall in Allen that claimed the lives of eight people.
