CNN’s Chris Cuomo said on Monday that he had urged his brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York, to resign — something he “never imagined ever having to do.”
Coming off a weeklong, regularly scheduled vacation, Cuomo addressed his brother’s resignation at the end of his Monday night show, repeating what he’d told viewers before — that it has never been easy being a journalist in a political family. He mentioned having his brother on his show early on in the coronavirus pandemic for “short-lived” appearances, and reminded viewers that CNN has a policy that doesn’t allow him to report on the New York governor because of a conflict of interest.
Cuomo addressed the “stories” and “critics” who are saying “all kinds of things” about him, questioning his role in his brother’s response to the allegations. “I never misled anyone about the information I was delivering or not delivering on this program,” he said. “I never attacked nor encouraged anyone to attack any woman who came forward. I never made calls to the press about my brother’s situation. I never influenced or attempted to control CNN’s coverage of my family.”
“There are a lot of people feeling a lot of hurt and a lot of pain right now,” Cuomo said. “And my hope is that, ultimately, everyone involved can get to a better place. That some higher good will be served in all of this. As for me, I’ve told you it’s never easy being in this business and coming from a political family, especially now. The situation is unlike anything I could have imagined.”
