Billed as a two-day event honoring the indispensable contributions by people of African descent from Latin America and the Caribbean, this year’s event drew on the power of storytelling and historical memory, simultaneously celebrating salsa and the genre’s inherent African roots.
“In Minnesota, there weren’t as many Caribbean Latinas, so they never really saw brown people like us,” added Brianna “Breezy” Dotson. “I am just so happy to start being accepted within our community, at a time where the world is more and more learning about black Latinos.” “Mommy’s playing the congas in our set tonight,” explained Coco. “It’s really dope because we’re mixing up what we usually do. We’re adding in some Spanish [language] music, doing salsa and merengue and some Jersey club. We’re also doing Afro-house dance, very Caribbean stuff.”
“I think something that’s really special about us is that we grew up with our dad being from the South. He’s from Arkansas and grew up during segregation,” shared Coco. “We grew up with an extremely Southern father and then an extremely traditional Puerto Rican mom, so culture for us is super strong. One day, we’d have black-eyed peas, catfish, and grits for breakfast, and the next, we’d have arroz con pollo for dinner.
