In Fort Collins, Colo., the drop Wednesday afternoon was 40.8 degrees in 30 minutes.
In Casper, Wyo., the temperature dropped 25 degrees in 20 minutes on Wednesday morning — from 28 to 3 degrees. At 6 a.m. Thursday, it was 35 below zero, with a wind chill of 76 below.
Because of severe winter weather, more than 1,400 flights have been canceled across the United States, the flight tracking site FlightAware said Thursday morning. Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport leads the way, followed by Denver International and Chicago’s Midway International. Thursday is expected to be the busiest pre-Christmas day for travel. Many airlines have issued weather waivers, allowing ticket changes without a fee.
