A Colorado man arrested Saturday is accused of sending threatening emails to state Treasurer Dave Young and his staff over $1,270 in unclaimed property.
The Denver District Attorney’s Office charged Malcolm Campbell, 40, with attempting to influence a public servant, retaliation against an elected official and menacing, court records show.
Campbell grew upset, the affidavit says, when treasurer’s office staff told Campbell he needed to submit additional documentation for his claim, and that it could take up to 90 days for the office to process his paperwork. Campbell’s language grew increasingly violent in emails throughout January and February, investigators said in the affidavit. Campbell, who is Black, said he believed the government was ignoring its Black citizens.As the emails poured in, Young and his staff worried for their safety. Gov. Jared Polis, according to authorities, approved additional security for the treasurer.
A Department of the Treasury spokesperson said they do not comment on pending criminal investigations.
