Columbus City Schools Project Connect employees have regained union status through the Columbus Education Association.
Arbitrator Cynthia Stanley ordered Columbus City Schools on Dec. 30 to “immediately restore these nine positions to the bargaining unit, to make whole with interest each employee who suffered loss of pay and benefits," according to the CEA, which represents 4,500 teachers, librarians, nurses, counselors and other professional employees.Project Connect is the district’s homeless student advocate program. The district removed their employee’s union status in July.
"Last spring, we aligned the positions in the Division of Students and Families in Transition to the work being completed, and the arbitrator disagreed with our alignment," district spokesperson Scott Wortman said."We will be working with the arbitrator to move forward in the arbitration process. In the meantime, we will continue to serve our students and families in need.
Recently, Project Connect has been working to help get bus assignments for students who had been living at . The district had identified at least 17 students connected to the Latitude Five25 complex as of Tuesday morning, district spokesperson Jacqueline Bryant said.
