Who wouldn’t want to boast they are the hometown of a top-notch National Football League franchise? The Bears are a rich legacy team whose history dates to the founding of the NFL.

Then there’s the cash and jobs which would be rolling in for construction and operation of a new $5 billion enclosed stadium, with attendant entertainment zone and housing options. No wonder the municipal blitz is on for luring the team to suburban outposts.The Bears say they will pay to build a new stadium by themselves, but need to limit their tax liabilities while requiring public funding for infrastructure.

The team remains coy where they might land their lair if they decide to abandon Chicago after playing at Soldier Field for more than 50 years. All the current suitors have touted their locations, availability of large tracts of acreage, transportation options and boundless development opportunities. None so far has offered tax-abating incentives to draw the team farther from Chicago.

That was after the Bears learned the Cook County Assessor’s Office jacked the property tax bill fivefold for the Arlington Heights site.
