Justin Herbert has led his team to a wild card. Dolphins' gamble failed, though Tua shouldn't be blamed, given his injury risk.

In gambling that Tua Tagovailoa could stay healthy, the men who led the Miami Dolphins chose not to heed a large neon sign. The decision could haunt the Dolphins for many years, and it’s a funny coincidence that Miami’s huge gamble may someday put a Lombardi Trophy in the hands of Dean Spanos, who is nothing if not risk averse.Tua’s injury detours have been so frequent and disturbing that they figure to end his career if they continue at their current pace.

There’s an unfortunate vulnerability here, painfully apparent in September, when a Bills linebacker pushed Tua in the chest after the lefty threw a pass. As annoying as hindsight critiques can be, it’s not revisionist history that Dolphins executive Chris Grier took an extraordinary risk when he invested the No. 5 pick of the 2020 draft in Tua.

The Dolphins were seduced by the accuracy and twitchy movements Tua displayed, and glowing reports about his leadership. Without hedging, several former NFL evaluators had labeled Tua’s health projection too risky for the draft’s bigger-money slots.
