If the Harvey Transportation Center is built as designed, it would be a tremendous missed economic development opportunity to highlight the community’s rich past and enormous potential, writes Ted Slowik.

A Harvey Historical Society representative presented a petition Wednesday calling for Metra to change the design of the proposed Harvey Transportation Center.

“Surely some of that money could instead be used to expand upon the current station design and complement it instead of replacing it with generic glass and steel that are cold and utilitarian,” Ryan Sinwelski of the Harvey Historical Society wrote to members of the Metra board, which met Wednesday morning.

Sinwelski has publicly shared the design team’s responses to his concerns on a Harvey Historical Society social media page. He also shared with me email responses he received from the public transit agency. The design of the proposed Harvey Transportation Center will better serve pedestrians, bicyclists and other users, the agency noted. Planners recently held an open houseand publicly presented plans to the Harvey City Council and received supportive feedback.

Tinley Park's downtown Metra Train Station has a clock tower and other architecturally appealing features.
