Could a Jeff Hostetler opportunity arise for former Toreros star Josh Johnson, now with the San Francisco 49ers?
Josh Johnson continues to find NFL work, and wouldn’t it be something if a Jeff Hostetler scenario is brewing for the University San Diego alum?
Same as the 49ers who lost Jimmy Garoppolo to a foot injury Sunday, the 1990 Giants boasted an NFL-best defense and a capable ground game.Of course it’s rich to invoke Hostetler, and it’s Brock Purdy — not Johnson — who’ll start against the Bucs. But it’s notable that coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch Jr. signed Johnson off Denver’s practice squad instead of promoting Jacob Eason.
The West-leading Niners beat Miami after rookie Purdy replaced Garoppolo in the first quarter and threw two touchdowns passes and an interception. “He just went in there and played,” Shanahan told KNBR radio Thursday. His nine NFL starts, mostly for bad teams, resulted in just one victory. He has 16 interceptions, 13 touchdown passes and a subpar 70.7 passer rating in 37 career games.
