Shortstop is behind Fernando Tatis Jr., but other positions remain options

On the surface, it’s the kind of baseball stop sign that glows sunburn-red with S-T-O-P spelled out in capital letters.

Count that as Clue No. 1 that a stop sign at one position comes with potential off ramps to second base and centerfield.“That’s out of my control, where I play,” Abrams told the Union-Tribune on Wednesday at Peoria Sports Complex. “But I’m going to do my best I can at any position. So, whatever happens, happens.

The flexibility with Abrams comes because of a rare collection of tools that park him squarely among the farm-system elite. He can hit. He can defend. He can run … and run … and run.The fact Tatis looms in his path simply means other paths must be considered. Athleticism is a passport waiting for a colorful array of stamps, whether it’s the infield or outfield.

There’s an argument to be made Abrams is the most athletic player in the system not named Tatis since Preller arrived at Petco Park. He hit .296 during an injury-shortened 2021 at Double-A San Antonio, with 13 steals in 42 games.
