Column: San Diego State's first-half shooting struggles evoke Butler's 2011 performance in Houston
Unfortunately for San Diego State and all mid-major programs, that’s what happened Monday night in the first halfIn Houston’s same NFL stadium where 2011 title-game finalist Butler saw its offense vanish in the second half against Connecticut, the Aztecs endured comparable offensive futility against an even taller, deeper version of UConn.
“Their length at the rim is bothering us,” coach Brian Dutcher told a CBS reporter during the first half. Problem: Connecticut was deeper and more cohesive than any of those teams. The Huskes had won all five of their games in the tournament by double digits. They beat Gonzaga by 28 points.Adam Seiko made a 3-point shot from the corner, cutting the score to 45-35 five minutes into the half. Until then, the bench hadn’t scored.
It felt somewhat like January 1995, when the Chargers played in their only Super Bowl. The Aztecs fared better than those Bolts, who were a 19-point underdog and lost, 49-26, to a 49ers team led by Hall of Famers Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders.
