Ahead of Sunday's match in Kansas City, coach Casey Stoney declines to release teenage forward to U.S. under-20 team.

A surprise to a Wave season that doesn’t end until Oct. 15 is that the club’s next match, Sunday in Kansas City, looms large.

After all, the coach released her in August for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Costa Rica, preparations for which began days after Shaw, then 17, became the youngest player to score in her National Women’s Soccer’s League debut. In a more cooperative soccer world — similar to the European one Stoney experienced — better scheduling by the NWSL and FIFA would spare Stoney decisions such as the one that denied her second-year standout an international experience.
