Local filmmakers are using the historic Motor Transport Museum and feldspar mine in Campo as a spooky setting for murder and mayhem.

Thirty-seven years ago, Rick Roessler and Jerry Encoe collaborated to create a low-budget cult horror comedy, “Slaughterhouse.”Now they are at it again. This time, the star of the show will be the rural community of Campo along Highway 94 southeast of San Diego. The filmmakers, both in their 70s, have been involved in projects together off and on since they were civilians working on Navy SEAL training films here during the Vietnam War era.

The sinister-looking nine-story, 100-foot-tall feldspar building is surrounded by eerie carcasses of rusted trucks, buses and other transportation vehicles. So, “Slaughterhouse 2 Death Metal” was born. Roessler, of Skycam Productions in Encinitas, has been busy penning a script. Instead of murders playing out on a pig farm at the home of Les Bacon and his hulking, dimwitted son, Buddy, who butchered visitors upon request, the gruesome plot unfolds in the salvage yard and spooky abandoned buildings of the base.Wonder Jerky’s mystery ingredients are ground body parts — mostly from ill-fated hikers who “disappear” from the nearby Pacific Crest Trail.

They shot a scene with the metal band Hemlock in Brick By Brick, a music venue in downtown San Diego.
