Center fielder is hitting .198 with a .653 OPS in more than 1,100 at-bats since June 12, 2021, including .133 in his last 26 games
The Padres need to move away from Trent Grisham in center field, no matter the elite defense and white-hot run during last season’s playoffs. It’s easy to understand why the team might be hesitant to bench the glove that routinely sparkles. Any ball in his zip code — and plenty out of it — become an out waiting to happen.
“It’s not the only position that we’re not getting production from, but he has the ability to be way better,” manager Bob Melvin said.Since returning from the 2021 injury, Grisham has hit .198 with a .653 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in 1,112 at-bats. The sample size becomes more profound when considering he has more plate appearances in that stretch than everyone other than Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth.
Melvin recently acknowledged the possibility of right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. playing center. On Sunday, utility player Brandon Dixon logged pregame work in right field. The Padres might say that was because they entered the game with a two-man bench.Dixon played the outfield in the minors. The Padres could plug that hole until the trade deadline in hopes of picking up a corner-outfield bat. That would show a commitment to fixing a broken offense in any and all ways possible.
Melvin is the one with the smaller sample size, seeing Grisham for less than a season and a half. Why, though, would anyone in the dugout or beyond believe the short-circuiting production across multiple seasons change? The Padres were outhit 11-5, but the Cubs stranded just three runners while San Diego abandoned eight.
