San Diegans are embracing National Women's Soccer League club. Alex Morgan's popularity helps; so, too, does the team's outreach to kids

Another Wave game comes Saturday night in Mission Valley, and once again the crowd will far exceed the norms of the world’s top women’s soccer league.

The Wave, like most sports teams and concert promoters, announce tickets distributed as attendance. That the actual turnstile count is smaller than the announced crowd mirrors Padres and Aztecs games, and the disparity between tickets distributed and fans present wasn’t great. “They’re supporting, they’re cheering on,” said Iliana Grant, who attended the October playoff game with husband Christopher and daughter Lizzie.

“Lizzie was so excited to meet Alex Morgan,” said Iliana, who lauded Jack Gates of Triumph Together, a nonprofit organization that connects collegiate and professional athletes with kids at nearby children’s hospitals.
