Wave resume season Saturday with road match against Trinity Rodman-led Washington Spirit

The National Women’s Soccer League’s appeal is growing among teenagers who otherwise would play college soccer.

One, two or three teens led by Jaedyn Shaw will play in the Wave’s match Saturday against the Spirit in Washington, D.C.Shaw, 18, has three goals in five matches, sharing Wave honors with Alex Morgan, 33, who is FIFA’s No. 2 ranked player. Teammate Melanie Barcenas, wearing jersey No. 15 to match her age, elicited cheers Saturday night from a San Diego crowd of 16,000 she dribbled past a 31-year-old defender soon after entering her first NWSL game.

The Spirit are pioneers of the NWSL’s youth movement. Chloe Ricketts, 15, has played in three of their matches this year. Trinity Rodman, the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, was 18 when the Spirit drafted her second overall in 2021. After the pandemic canceled Washington State University’s season in 2020, Rodman chose to turn pro — a decision that’s worked out like a bicycle kick into the net.
