Robbins got her start in the late ’60s as one of the first women cartoonists in underground comics, and later was a pioneer of feminist comics. In recent years, she’s been writing books…
The first time writer and cartoonist Trina Robbins came to, it was 1977 and she almost missed the panel she was scheduled to appear on because she was having so much fun at the pool at the old El Cortez Hotel.
, we found her at the Hermes Press booth signing copies of her more recent book, “Gladys Parker: A Life in Comics and Passion for Fashion.” “Mopsy” got its name thanks to cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who once told Parker her hair looked like a mop. Her style, though, was pure Parker, who also worked as a fashion designer in Hollywood in the ’30s and ’40s, and illustrated her own newspaper ads for department stores that carried her line.
After her criticisms of misogyny in the cartoons of male underground comix artists, including those of R. Crumb, Robbins said her detractors claimed she just didn’t have a sense of humor.
