The Washington Commanders used the second day of the NFL draft to add defensive back Jartavius Martin at 47th overall and offensive lineman Ricky Stromberg in the third round.
At Illinois, Martin played all over the secondary, switching from corner to safety midway through his sophomore season, then to the slot as a junior. Last year, he played 13 games in the “star” position, rotating between the slot and playing the deep safety as the Fighting Illini’s version of the big nickel.“It’s my understanding of the game,” Martin said Friday of his strengths.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspects of Martin’s résumé are his production at multiple spots on the field and his knack for finding the ball.Coach Ron Rivera said Thursday that ball skills and takeaways were two traits the Commanders” defense emphasized this offseason. Their first-round pick, cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. out of Mississippi State, tallied 14 career interceptions in college, including six returned for touchdowns, a Football Bowl Subdivision record.
“It was actually one of my favorite visits,” Martin said Friday. “Just to be able to get back to a place I really enjoy is awesome.”
