Members of the Alamo Trust will walk in memory of the Trinity University professor Carey Latimore during Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. march. Latimore, who died in July, was commited to civil rights and telling a complete story at the Alamo.a beloved and longtime professor at Trinity University
His work on the Alamo Citizens Advisory Committee and the Alamo Museum Planning Committee, and as the chair of the subcommittee on the civil rights exhibit at the Alamo helped bridge the divide between different perspectives on how to move forward with this multifaceted plan. During his speech, Latimore also highlighted the Alamo’s unique link to Juneteenth. Historical records show Emancipation Day gatherings — now a federal holiday known as Juneteenth — were celebrated on the grounds of the Alamo as early as the 1890s.
