Bills in the Texas Senate and House that target drag performers take us back to a dark time.
which would allow anyone in Texas to sue people who perform in drag or host a drag performance where children are present, are discriminatory.
As a non-binary person, the art of drag has brought me joy and helped me feel validated in my genderqueerness. The possibility of these bills passing saddens me.The rights of drag performers are closely tied to the empowerment of queer people. Consider the LGBTQ+ rights movement. In the 1950s, there were limited spaces for LGBTQ+ people to exist without harassment. They were often not allowed in gay bars, much less public spaces.
On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn, a gay club, was raided by police officers. The constant disenfranchisement experienced by LGBTQ+ people and drag queens motivated others to take a stand; they had nothing to lose in a society that made their existence illegal. Trailblazers like Sylvia Rivera, a transgender woman, and Marsha P. Johnson, a drag queen, fought on the front lines of the Stonewall Inn riots that paved the way for the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
The implications of HB 1266 and HB 4378 can be harmful to a vulnerable community. LGBTQ+ youth are more likely to attempt suicide than their peers. Some consider the art of drag lifesaving.Statewide, drag queens such as Tencha La Jefa and Brigitte Bandit have voiced their concerns through performance. And some drag queens have shared their experiences at the state capitol and questioned the absurdity of bills that threaten the art of drag.
