'In some ways, the big winner tonight was really Biden,' says CNN's Van Jones. 'Nobody came after Biden, and now Biden has a little bit more of an understanding about what they're going to do to him.' DemDebate
At Tuesday night’s Democratic debate, the stakes were higher than in last month's encounter – and rightly so. All of the candidates on stage, with the exception of Montana Governor Steve Bullock, had been in the first round of debates. They had the opportunity to perform before a national audience, as well as to observe the techniques and styles of their opponents.for the debate, there was to be no “show of hands” or single-word-answer questions.
That said, the candidates tonight seemed ready and eager to engage each other. But Pete Buttigieg did well right out of the gate, starting with his opening statement, in which he basically stated that it was time to stop recycling old ideas.that Democrats should take to heart. “It’s time to stop worrying about what the Republicans will say,” he declared. “Look, it’s true, if we embrace a far-left agenda, they will say were a bunch of crazy socialists.
This sentiment could be applied to virtually any issue, from immigration to climate change, and good for Buttigieg for pointing it out. He also offered up what will likely seem like a smart, accessible choice for many Americans: Medicare for all. In the midst of a chorus of impassioned – and at times agitated voices – his even-keeled, thoughtful sensibility stood out. Bravo, Mayor Pete.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, Steve Bullock and John Delaney seemed woefully out of sync amid this group of progressive Democrats. It's hard to imagine them making it to the next round of debates.is an attorney and a member of the USA Today board of contributors. Follow him on Twitter
