The Commerce Department is already taking over parts of the nation’s space traffic management mission—even though Congress hasn't officially approved the directive

We’re about to name our candidate to go to Vandenberg [Air Force Base in California]. That will be the first member of landing team, and it’s an internal Commerce employee. I’m not ready to announce a name yet, but we’ll do that as quickly as we possibly can. … We can’t transition any part of this mission unless we understand 100 percent of the day-to-day [details] of how the mission works today. That’s the idea of putting somebody out there.
