Having spent a fraction of the annual U.S. military budget in security assistance, Ukraine managed to cut Putin’s combat capacity in half, which U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., highlighted at a recent press conference in Kyiv. That is a significant and historic return on investment when it comes to our own national security and interests, and the investment in protections against the threats posed by Putin and Russia against members.
As Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., rightfully said in a recent interview: “It’s certainly not the time to go wobbly. Now, with Ukraine bravely defending its sovereignty and eroding Russia’s capacity to threaten NATO, it is not the time to ease up. … Helping Ukraine retake its territory means weakening one of America’s biggest strategic adversaries without firing a shot.
Reagan’s doctrine worked against the Soviets in Afghanistan, which forced the Kremlin to admit defeat and withdraw. In the spirit of Reagan and proven American policy, we can do it again and help defeat Putin without putting American soldiers in harm’s way. Congress should move forward with both military and other aid for Ukraine to help this American ally win its battle in saving its sovereignty and protecting our U.S. national security.
