Week 4 featured a loaded college football slate, and while not all the marquee games lived up to the hype, we still learned plenty about Oregon, Colorado, Alabama and others.
, starting his first huge game for Ohio State, played mistake-free ball but averaged just 11.4 yards per completion. The Buckeyes needed major assistance from their defense to win. And they got it.
The Buckeyes still rank a decent 36th in success rate allowed, but they've also allowed just three gains of 30-plus yards in four games. Only Duke has allowed fewer. Ohio State's pass rush has admittedly vanished -- they're 64th in pressure rate and 110th in sack rate -- and we'll see if that catches up to them. But they were selectively aggressive against the Irish, and it paid off. They held Notre Dame to two scores, they're allowing 8.
It was jarring, then, to see Swinney and his charges make so many poor decisions late against Florida State on Saturday. After playing an aggressive and outstanding first half, and after taking a 17-7 lead in the process, Clemson had weathered an FSU comeback attempt and a 56-yard scoop-and-score from the Seminoles'and were driving for the game-winning points with two minutes left. But their last three play-calls of regulation revealed a shocking lack of confidence.
Oklahoma hasn't faced anyone as good as Bama, but the Sooners treated two lesser opponents like high school teams, winning by a combined 139-17, and in two games against decent teams , their offense wasn't as high flying, but their defense was constant. They won those two by a combined 48-17.
