Conroe schools will remove from library shelves some books and materials that have come under fire for LGBTQ themes and sexual content, but will allow students to check them out with their parent’s permission, trustees decided this week.Conroe schools will remove from library shelves some books and materials that have come under fire for LGBTQ themes and sexual content, but will allow students to check them out with their parent’s permission, trustees decided this week.
The board also approved a separate policy for classroom materials containing that content. Before the vote the district had one policy for both. “The current policy as it reads now says that we cannot restrict access during the formal review process since it’s stated in policy,” CISD Superintendent Curtis Null told the board at the regular May meeting while discussing the suggested policy changes. “This would be a change to current policy that would allow us to put in this level of parental involvement into a book that was in the challenge process.
Both policies state that when a parent makes an informal objection to material their student is using a district administrator will explain the selection process and intended purpose of the material. If appropriate the administrator may re-evaluate the material to determine that it meets district selection criteria, or may offer the parent an alternative material to be used.
