The price has ballooned from $25 million since a 2010 master plan centered on restoring the theater to its original design from the 1950s.

could cost more than $300 million, according to a new project master plan by the Dallas Theater Center released this week.

Dickey points to an April 2019 city council quality of life committee meeting discussing the newest master plan where the conversation centered on the project likely costing between $30 million to $40 million. “The Kalita itself is a gem and I do wish the focal point would be to restore it to its architectural grandeur,” said Rudy Kamini, another Park board member. He represents the Oak Lawn area district where the theater is based. “But when I look at everything else, I have a hard time seeing it as anything more than an unnecessary commercification of our parks. I just don’t know if it’s worth it.”

The latest master plan is an update mandated by the City Council in 2019 for the Dallas Theater Center to deliver per the terms of the most recent lease agreement. The theater on Turtle Creek Boulevard is one of the last completed works designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who died before it opened in 1959. The building was built for the Dallas Theater Center, and the group donated it to the city in 1974.in 2005. The site is still currently owned by the city and leased to the Dallas Theater Center for $1 a year to manage the nearly 500-seat venue. The latest agreement expires June 1, 2024.
