Musician Joaquin Muerte Abrego refuses to play Fiesta because of its racial history origins.
“I grew up in it. The minute I could start singing, I would just start singing,” Abrego said. “My mom has tapes and recordings of me singing around the house.” One place he refuses to perform is at Fiesta, an annual event in San Antonio that generates hundreds of millions of dollars for the local economy. “When I had that realization, I was just like, wait, where do I come into this equation? One example she points to is how many of the Fiesta events cost money to access, which is why many working-class people find themselves in spaces like the Historic Market Square in the heart of Downtown. “It means a lot because I know where I came from, a lot of people they don’t have the money to enter some places where they charge fees. Here you can come, bring the family, have fun, make drinks. We got a price range for everybody,” Pena said.
