That definitely was not in his job description.
Last week, officer Mark Pieffer of the Berlin Borough Police Department in Berlin, New Jersey was working his second-ever shift as a cop when he responded to a 1:30 a.m. call that a woman had gone into labor in a car parked outside an event space. Ten minutes later, the rookie had delivered a healthy baby girl.
“The dad was yelling to me, ‘She can’t go. She’s not going to make it. The baby’s coming now,’” Pieffer told Philly-based news stationThe 31-year-old had no training on how to deliver a baby and isn’t a dad himself, but he acted quickly, grabbing gloves and blankets. Once he had a chance to observe the mom-to-be, however, he admits he thought he was going to be in the clear.
“I’m happy everything turned out well,” Mary told reporters. “It’s a great story now, that’s for sure.” It’s safe to say that Pieffer, who was a teacher before joining the police force, will never forget his second day on his new job. And Alice will have a great story to tell her future friends. “It just feels good to be able to help,” Pieffer said. “Whether it was my second night or in my tenth year."
