Florida cops fatally shot a man who attacked them with a pair of scissors inside a hospital, authorities said.
The 29-year-old man had been brought to Cleveland Indian Clinic in Vero Beach on Friday by relatives after he tried to hang himself,
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said the man began running through the hospital with a pair of “large scissors” Saturday night while four deputies happened to be nearby.“At that point, our deputies begin to retreat back” in a small, narrow hallway, Flowers said. “They draw their weapons and two of the deputies fire, shooting and killing this man.”
Body camera footage shows the patient in a hospital gown, brandishing an item in front of the deputies. Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said the man began running through the hospital with a pair of “large scissors.”The deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, officials said.Sheriff Eric Flowers said the entire incident lasted roughly five seconds.The man was involuntarily committed under a Florida law — the Baker Act — that allows authorities to hold individuals in a mental health facility for up to 72 hours.
“It’s a terrible tragedy, not just in our county, but in our country. We’re facing a mental health crisis,” Flowers said. “The fact that we were up there taking people in for suicidal incidents for Baker Acts, that they had multiple Baker Act patients awaiting transportation to a facility because there’s not enough beds, and the fact that this gentleman had been waiting there for a day and a half shows what kind of mental health crisis we’re in right now.
