Drey Jameson to get second opinion on UCL injury
For the first time this season, the Diamondbacks won in extra innings, pulling off the feat in a 3-2 victory over the Pirates on Saturday afternoon.
The other run came across on a Jack Suwinski double off Tyler Gilbert in the sixth. Gilbert, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Reno before the game, threw three innings, the most of any Diamondbacks’ reliever. Kyle Nelson, Kevin Ginkel, Austin Adams, Miguel Castro, Andrew Chafin and Scott McGough worked the rest of the game and did not allow an earned run.
Their first hit of the game did not come until the sixth inning, when Ketel Marte singled to right field. Marte also had a hard-hit lineout to first base in the third inning. Other than his contributions, though, the offense has been completely silent, with only four scattered walks. It's a return of the meager offense that managed just 20 runs in eight games before seemingly breaking through in last night's 7-3 win.
After the 12th pick, the Diamondbacks will pick twice more on the first day of the draft. They also have pick Nos. 48 and 64. “Everybody tells that to me, I think,” he said, laughing. “That puts a lot of pressure on me because he is an incredible player. If we get a player like that at 12, I’ll be incredibly happy. But I’ve heard that a couple times.”
The most important news, though, centers around Jameson after initial imaging revealed concerns with his elbow. Lovullo did not go into detail about what that entails, but did confirm that Jameson’s ulnar collateral ligament is “the area we’re looking at.” A tear to that ligament would require Tommy John Surgery, which would sideline Jameson until late in the 2024 season, if not until 2025 spring training.
Lovullo also acknowledged that injuries can happen at any time and there’s a possibility that Jameson’s injury was not a result of anything the Diamondbacks did.
