, an award-winning bestseller that teaches that attitudes on race are taught, for good or ill, and called it “stunning” that children as young as 4 would be taught that “babies are racist.”
As for Cornyn’s line of argument, “I’m talking about when you were representing a member of the Taliban and the Department of Defense identified him as an intelligence officer of the Taliban and you referred to the secretary of defense and the sitting president of the United States as war criminals. Why would you do something like that? It seems so out of character,” he said.
“I noticed a little surprise in your reaction, and I was surprised by the allegation,” he told Jackson. “To be clear, there was no time where you’d call President Bush or Secretary Rumsfeld a quote, war criminal, close quote.” Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson testified at her confirmation hearing on March 22, 2022.
In the War Crimes Act of 1996, Congress made it illegal to commit a “grave breach” of the Geneva Conventions. The Bush administration maintained that waterboarding and other interrogation methods did not constitute torture as defined by U.S. and international law. Jackson referred to “the provocative thesis that the America that was born in 1776 was not the perfect union that it purported to be,” as Cruz recounted.had recently been published and it was fresh on students’ minds, she said. And that was only a passing reference in a speech about Black women and the civil rights movement.
Cruz brought out a chart purporting to show that as a trial judge, Jackson regularly handed down lighter sentences than sought by prosecutors, especially in cases involving sex offenses.
