Coryell's reputation for passing offense began at San Diego in the 1960s and reached new heights in the NFL with the Chargers' 'Air Coryell' offense

Don Coryell’s original plan was to spend his life walking through forests in the Pacific Northwest and enjoying the outdoors, not stalking football sidelines and innovating offenses.

That brilliance is expected to be recognized — long, long overdue in the minds of Coryell’s many supporters — when the NFL’s 2023 Hall of Fame class is announced on Thursday evening. Coryell was a finalist six previous times. After graduating from Seattle’s Lincoln High School, where he played quarterback in a single-wing offense, Coryell’s college career was delayed by three years in the Army.

A 1952 book by former TCU coach L.R. Dutch Meyer called “Spread Formation Football” was among the resources that may have sparked Coryell’s marvelous football mind. Before he was halfway down the drive, Coryell’s mind was elsewhere, and the trash cans were still in the car when he arrived at work.“He’d put me in the car and was supposed to drop me off at the bus stop,” Lewis said. “I ended up at San Diego State with him several times.

It’s interesting to note that SDSU ran more than it passed in Coryell’s first four seasons with the Aztecs. The aerial attack really took off a year later, when Horn passed for 2,234 yards, the first time in school history a QB reached the 2,000-yard plateau. It was hailed the next morning in the San Diego Union as “one of the greatest football victories in Aztec history.”

According to a Union story, they succeeded by “flooding the zones and forcing single coverage by Weber’s three-deep defense, an almost impossible situation since they were double-covering Moses most of the night.” Three straight AFC West Division titles followed from 1979-81 when Air Coryell took flight with quarterback Dan Fouts at the controls.
