Could James Cameron's Avatar leap to the small screen? 'They’re so cost and labor intensive that it really doesn’t work for TV. Now, come back in 10 years... We might be able to get to a TV schedule, but it doesn’t interest me right now.'

Acclaimed director and creator of the Avatar franchise James Cameron responds to the possibility of an Avatar television series at some point in the future. While eager audiences are awaiting the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron has already mapped out the Avatar franchise for three more films following the much-awaited sequel.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron shut down the possibility of an Avatar TV series happening any time in the near future. He believes that a show could be possible in another 10 years, but that there are no plans for one at this time. Check out Cameron's full statement below:

"The problem with these CG characters is that they’re so cost- and labor-intensive that it really doesn’t work for TV. Now, come back in 10 years, with a lot of machine deep learning. Insert it into our pipeline, which we hope to do, over time. We might be able to get to a TV schedule, but it doesn’t interest me right now.

The stories Cameron wants to tell in his Avatar universe also may not translate well to the small screen either. Avatar featured a conflict that, at its core, was an alien invasion story featuring humans as the invaders, decimating the environment and Na'vi of Pandora. It appears Avatar: The Way of Water will be building on that conflict as well, making human intervention against the Na'vi a key component of the Avatar franchise.

Avatar has also been established as an event franchise of sorts, with the highly-anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water releasing over a decade after the first film. While the next three Avatar films are expected to be released every other year, Cameron still took his time in developing all of them, indicating that they were each crafted as major components of his overall story.
