The Irish government is expected to adopt a cautious approach to re-opening plans and the further easing of Covid-19 restrictions.However, a recent surge in new Covid-19 infections and hospital admissions has led to a re-think.
The Irish National Public Health Emergency Team met on Monday evening and Irish cabinet ministers are considering its advice.On Monday, 1,578 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the Republic of Ireland and there were 484 people in hospital with the virus. The plan was originally that, from Friday 22 October, restrictions would end, apart from wearing masks in public transport and retail outlets.However, physical distancing, mask wearing and the use of Covid-19 certificates could now continue until Spring 2022.Taoiseach Micheál Martin has rejected suggestions that the Republic was stuck 'in groundhog day'
Speaking to RTÉ before he went into Tuesday's cabinet the Taoiseach Micheál Martin said how the next few months pan out would depend on the "collective behaviour of all of us"."We do know is that vaccines do work in preventing hospitalisation and particularly severe illness so therefore it's very important that people who are not vaccinated would get vaccinated," he said.
"There are a whole range of measures that NPHET is recommending around behaviour, around the masks, continuing wearing of masks in a whole range of settings, and also in terms of vaccination certificates which government will consider later," he added.Meanwhile, vaccine boosters for people aged 60 and over have been approved by the Republic of Ireland's National Immunisation Advisory Committee .No decision has been reached yet by NIAC on a booster jab for health care workers.
