‘Like they were soldiers:’ In San Antonio, pandemic shaped nurse training, expectations and jobs

Doctor of nursing practice graduates Carmen Chairez, from left, Katherine Cermin, Rabab Arastu and Rochelle Albrycht wait for their chance to march to their seats at the start of UT Health San Antonio’s commencement Saturday at the Alamodome. When Fernando Anaya-Vasquez decided to get a bachelor’s degree in nursing, he knew why. He wanted to help people, get paid reliably enough to help him support his parents, and to do it in San Antonio, where he could serve the Hispanic community.

Doctor of nursing practice Lude Xue celebrates receiving her diploma as she walks across the stage at UT Health San Antonio’s commencement Saturday at the Alamodome. The pandemic made nursing education harder, more realistic and more urgent in San Antonio. In the early days of the pandemic, students had to transition to online classes and clinical simulations, where they worked with mannequins instead of real people.

“Honestly, there were points where you just sort of question if you want to continue. Is this it? Or is it going to get better? We were at a point where it was pretty tough,” said Rabab Arastu, who pursued her doctor of nursing practice degree at UT Health. “This group of students is really strong in their adaptability,” said Dr. Tonya Maunsell, the interim director of nursing at SAC.
