A council member told city officials Monday that the proposed ordinance was too heavy-handed and that not enough has been done to educate residents since a coyote attack in May.

“We can’t even enforce our residents to keep their dogs on a leash,” he said during a meeting of the council’s quality of life, arts and culture committee. “So why are we going to use our resources to go into neighborhoods and make sure that people are not feeding [wildlife]?” Ann Barnes, a Dallas Animal Services assistant general manager, said the ordinance is meant to target people who are aware of the rules and continue feeding wildlife.

“We want to get some community feedback before we bring it back again to be approved,” Webber said. “We have the ordinance written, we just want to make sure that we have the community’s buy in.”how to respond to reports of coyotes since the May attack
