Adele Lim says she was offered hundreds of thousands of dollars less than her white, male co-screenwriter
one of the film’s co-screenwriters, exited the project last fall after allegedly being offered hundreds of thousands less than her white, male colleague,Color Force, one of the film’s producers, searched for roughly five months for another writer of Asian descent to take Lim’s place, reports, and came back to her in February with a higher offer—largely thanks to Chiarelli, who offered to split his own fee with Lim. She says she turned it down.
“Pete has been nothing but incredibly gracious, but what I make shouldn’t be dependent on the generosity of the white-guy writer,” Lim toldI can’t imagine what it would be like for anyone else, given that the standard for how much you’re worth is having established quotes from previous movies, which women of color would never have been [hired for]. There’s no realistic way to achieve true equity that way.
Chiarelli and Lim’s writing backgrounds differ somewhat: Chiarelli has focused on film, with credits includingOne Tree Hill, Private Practice,Sources tellthat Warner Bros. offered between $800,000 and $1 million to Chiarelli, and $110,000-plus to Lim. “Warners explained to Lim’s reps that the quotes are industry-standard established ranges based on experience and that making an exception would set a troubling precedent in the business,”who backed his business affairs department’s stance.
