In just three days, Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut Creed III has blasted past a major milestone that only a few 2023 releases have hit.
Creed III has added another huge box office record to its earth-shattering opening weekend. The film is the third entry in the Creed franchise, which follows Adonis Creed , the son of the character Apollo Creed from the Rocky franchise.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY According to Box Office Mojo, a worldwide opening weekend of $100.4 million has put the expectation-shattering Creed III in rarefied air. In just three days, it has become one of only three 2023 Hollywood releases to have passed the $100 million benchmark. The other titles to have achieved this goal are the Blumhouse killer doll hit M3GAN, Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and the Bollywood actioner Pathaan.
While the factors that led to this weren't entirely predictable, in retrospect it seems only natural. For one thing, Creed III is the first non-superhero Hollywood franchise blockbuster to hit theaters since the release of Avatar: The Way of Water last December. Although original films like Cocaine Bear and M3GAN have been performing well, audiences hungry for major popcorn movie tentpoles outside of the MCU and DCU were likely thrilled to have this breath of fresh air.
Creed III is one of many movies in the past few months to show that the depressed pandemic box office, while still erratic, seems to be on the road to recovery. It could potentially keep the ball rolling through the rest of the month as well. If it works in tandem with other upcoming March franchise sequels like Scream 6 and Shazam! Fury of the Gods as well as originals like 65, the film could prove to be an omen of good things to come.
