This documentary tells the story of a Catskills sleepaway camp that helped inspire a grass-roots movement
It’s a perfect match—Richie Havens chanting “Freedom” on the soundtrack while summer campers in the Catskills jump, run, lurch, hop, wobble and roll for joy in “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.” The time matches too.
The first glimpse we get of Camp Jened—in grainy black-and-white videotape—is from 1971, only two years after Havens sang at the Woodstock Festival. The hippie spirit is in full cry, and nowhere fuller than in this sweetly dilapidated paradise for disabled kids where boys and girls with a wide array of impediments are free to be their teenage selves.
