Animal Care Services captured this ringtail last week. Ringtails are a cousin of the raccoon and the state mammal of Arizona.in Texas, and plenty of unique species found in the Lone Star State, there are plenty of odd creatures mucking about.
San Antonio Animal Care Services was called to handle one of these odd creatures last week on Marbach Road on the West Side. On Sunday, ACS officials posted on social media about its run-in with a ringtail, a cousin of the raccoon. The ringtail was captured after a San Antonian, whom ACS called"Miss U," was driving when she spotted an injured animal.
"She saw the small, strange creature, thought it must've been a lemur, and used a towel to pick the animal up and put it in her vehicle," wrote ACS officials."While her intentions to help the animal were pure, the animal quickly became agitated and Miss U had to exit her vehicle and call 3-1-1 for help to keep from getting injured."
Animal Care Officer Estephen Centeno responded to the call, identifying the animal not as a lemur, like originally thought, but as a ringtail. "Ringtails are nocturnal little creatures native to San Antonio," ACS officials wrote."Though they look like a cross between a cat, fox and lemur, they are in the same family as raccoons and coatimundis."
