COVID-19 hindered all patrons, but it especially hit working-class residents who struggle to gain access to the internet and seek out classes and special programs. But residents are returning to the places that have brought communities together for decades

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- CiCi Nahiwatiwa missed the shelves of her library during the pandemic, as well as the programs and classes.

That became clear across Cuyahoga County and Northeast Ohio. COVID-19 hindered all patrons, but it especially hit working-class residents who struggle to gain access to the internet and seek out classes and special programs. But months after mask mandates have ended, residents are returning to the places that have brought communities together for decades, though the levels have yet to reach pre-pandemic levels.

Rich noted, however, that both patron visits and circulation numbers have increased since the start of the year. Since the library has been hosting more in-person programs, customer visits are up 36% over last year. For Lakewood Public Library, the numbers of users are trending upward, but they are not quite where they were before 2020, said Andrea Fisher, the manager of the Madison Branch.

Take Nahiwatiwa. A resident of Cleveland, she praised the Shaker Heights’ library programs, such as computer classes, and the free access to the internet. “Cleveland Public Library didn’t rush our reopening to ensure the safety of our patrons and library staff,” Felton Thomas, Jr, the executive director and CEO, said. ”COVID-19 gave us the opportunity for a renewed focus.”
