Two of the recipients jumped into action during shootings that became high-profile case. Another intervened during an assault. A fourth recipient turned a crash into a mission to educate others about DUI

When a gunman sprayed bullets inside Chabad of Poway in 2019, Oscar Stewart ran toward the gunfire and screamed at the shooter, seemingly scaring him off.

Stewart, Martinez, Michel and Mezan were honored Wednesday during the annual “Citizens of Courage” award ceremony. It marked the second year in a row that the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office hosted the event virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.District Attorney Summer Stephan said the awards honor good Samaritans and crime victims who step up during trying circumstances.

Stewart said his first instinct was to run away to safety with others — so he did. But then he turned around.Former Deputy District Attorney Leonard Trinh, who was appointed to the San Diego Superior Court bench last month, said Stewart ran into the foyer, past his wife and stepdaughter. He came face to face with the shooter and started yelling at him — “doing whatever he could to distract him,” Trinh said. He said Stewart was almost shot twice.

From her vehicle, Martinez saw her daughter order, then looked down at her cellphone. “Then I just heard gunshots, and I looked up and I didn’t see her no more,” Martinez said, fighting back tears. “I thought I had lost her.” Then she ran inside the restaurant to offer help. At first she didn’t see anyone because the employees had dropped to the floor. She asked if everyone was OK and asked for the keys to the door to lock up the restaurant in case the shooter returned, she said. She ran to her vehicle and called 911. “I’m at Church’s Chicken,” she told a dispatcher, according to audio of the call. “They shot everybody in there.

“I think we all know what would have happened if wouldn’t have interfered, because no one would have interfered, and she would have been living with that the rest of her life,” Nominati said.“I was glad I was there that day,” Michel said.Bruce Mezan was on his way to teach a motorcycle safety class at a local community college when a drunken 24-year-old driver struck him and his motorcycle at an intersection in Encinitas in February 2020.
